Leggo your ego.
IKKI is a song I made in 2009 about an allegedly legendary local performer that Iced Ink played with whose name shall remain encrypted within the song title. Said performer’s website was morbidly obese with paragraph after ego drenched paragraph about what else? How awesome said performer is, about how he or she played all over the country (and world if I recall correctly), and how he or she was changing the face of music as we know it.
My hopes were very high; here we were playing with a gifted local legend who probably had a pretty decent draw no less – and this show was on a weeknight (Hooray, we’ll have an audience for a change!) The night of the gig came, the legend appeared at the bar with their 4 person entourage, and they played an unbelievably underwhelming set to a mostly empty room. It almost seemed as if they were mocking themselves. Sadly they weren’t, they just really REALLY loved them some them. They finished their set and packed up and left immediately without saying a word to any of us. A few days later I received an email from them asking how much the payola was and where they needed to go to pick it up. Their money ($15 if that) was waiting for them at the bar at the end of the night of the show. It probably went into the sound man’s pocket when he realized that nobody from the band was there to collect. Such is life. No Taco Bell for them. I funneled the disgust I felt toward this self proclaimed legend into a song inspired by catching a most unfortunate, horrific glimpse of the legend bending over to pick up their guitar amp as they were leaving. It started with the BLOP. BLOP. riff and at :54 and I built around it from there.
When I recorded the demo I was in a hurry and as a result there were always certain little things I wished were different. I finally dusted off the old IKKI session and gave it a subtle but much needed beauty makeover. I always wanted the cleaner guitars to sound like a glass of milk and they finally do. To me, at least.
